New homework program credits volunteer hours

For high school students, it can be difficult to find — and be passionate about — volunteer work within the community.

Homework Plus is an independent learning enhancement program helping students learn academic and workplace skills, while raising money for a good cause. The Centre for Immigrant and Community Services is launching this brand new program Sept. 18.

“It’s a different take on the traditional homework club,” said Amir Akbari, developer and organizer of the program. “It’s similar to an ISU (independent study) in that we provide the support, but it’s up to the students to do the research and come up with the concepts.”
